Describe an impression without turning it into a fact

Einen Eindruck mit als ob wiedergeben

Use and transform a comparison with als ob while keeping its perspective and the requested verb form.

Als ob presents a comparison from a speaker’s perspective; it does not by itself prove the opposite factual situation. Es klang, als ob alles geklärt wäre and Es klang, als wäre alles geklärt retain the comparison with different clause patterns. This lesson asks for Konjunktiv II, while acknowledging that other subjunctive forms also occur in such comparisons.

Es klang, als ob alles schon geklärt wäre.

It sounded as if everything were already settled.

Es klang, als wäre alles schon geklärt.

It sounded as if everything were already settled.

Auf mich wirkte die Erklärung sehr voraussetzungsreich.

To me, the explanation seemed to assume substantial prior knowledge.

Der Vergleich beschreibt einen persönlichen Eindruck.

The comparison describes a personal impression.

Daraus folgt keine Aussage über jede einzelne Person.

No statement about every individual follows from that.

Ich wünsche mir kurze Erläuterungen der Abkürzungen.

I would like short explanations of the abbreviations.

Use and transform a comparison with als ob while keeping its perspective and the requested verb form.

Do not infer that nobody knew the abbreviations, or that everything was actually settled, from a personal comparison.

In the practised patterns, als ob introduces a verb-final clause; with als alone, the finite verb follows als. Do not turn the comparison into the unqualified statement Alles war geklärt. If the task specifies Konjunktiv II of sein, use wäre, not another otherwise possible construction.

Write a 250–300-word German response to the presenter. Mark your perception as personal, give two comparisons using the two practised patterns and formulate a concrete request for explanations without claiming to speak for every participant.
