Check a headline against the underlying report

Distinguish a measured change from its interpretation and identify what a headline leaves out.

A headline compresses information and can emphasize a dramatic interpretation. Read the underlying account before accepting its scope. Ask what was measured, over what period, among whom and compared with what. Prozent describes a relative change; Prozentpunkte describes the difference between two percentages. A rise from 40% to 50% is ten percentage points, not ten percent relative growth. Words such as laut, demnach and offenbar have different functions: laut attributes a source, demnach introduces an inference from prior information, and offenbar presents something as apparently evident. None replaces the evidence itself. Preserve the population and period when summarizing, and do not turn correlation or a small voluntary response into a universal conclusion.

Die Überschrift geht über die erhobenen Daten hinaus.

The headline goes beyond the data collected.

Der Anteil stieg von vierzig auf fünfzig Prozent.

The proportion rose from forty to fifty percent.

Das entspricht einem Anstieg um zehn Prozentpunkte.

That corresponds to an increase of ten percentage points.

Bezogen auf den Ausgangswert beträgt die relative Zunahme fünfundzwanzig Prozent.

Relative to the initial value, the increase is twenty-five percent.

Gleichzeitig wurde eine weitere Maßnahme eingeführt.

Another measure was introduced at the same time.

Die Beobachtung lässt sich nicht ohne Weiteres auf andere Gruppen übertragen.

The observation cannot simply be transferred to other groups.

Do not call a rise from 40% to 50% a relative increase of 10%. Ten is the percentage-point difference; the relative increase is 10/40 = 25%.

Check headline → source → measured quantity → comparison → scope. 40% to 50% means +10 percentage points, equivalent to +25% relative to 40%.

Write 180–220 words in German correcting the fictional headline “New timetable makes everyone attend.” The report says attendance in two selected groups rose from 40% to 50% over one month; a reminder email was also introduced, and other groups were not measured. Explain the numbers, propose a more accurate headline and name two unanswered questions.
