Distinguish obligation, permission and an exception
Pflicht, Erlaubnis und Ausnahme unterscheiden
Read a fictional team rule accurately, especially the difference between not required and not allowed.
Modal verbs determine the force of an instruction. Müssen expresses necessity; dürfen expresses permission. Nicht müssen and nicht brauchen … zu mean an action is not necessary, not forbidden. Nicht dürfen prohibits it. In a formal description, Das Team braucht nicht teilzunehmen means attendance is unnecessary; it may still be allowed. An exception introduced by es sei denn changes a general rule only in the specified case. Unless is not because: Die Sitzung findet statt, es sei denn, sie wird abgesagt does not say a cancellation has occurred. When explaining a policy, preserve who it applies to, what triggers an exception and who decides. The examples describe fictional internal rules, not legal advice.
Das diensthabende Team muss an der kurzen Besprechung teilnehmen.
The team on duty must attend the short briefing.
Andere Mitarbeitende brauchen nicht teilzunehmen.
Other staff do not need to attend.
Vertrauliche Unterlagen dürfen nicht im öffentlichen Kanal geteilt werden.
Confidential documents must not be shared in the public channel.
Die Besprechung findet statt, es sei denn, ein dringender Einsatz verhindert sie.
The briefing takes place unless an urgent deployment prevents it.
Eine Ausnahme gilt nur unter den genannten Bedingungen.
An exception applies only under the stated conditions.
Aus einer Erlaubnis folgt keine Verpflichtung.
Permission does not imply an obligation.

„Du brauchst nicht teilzunehmen“ does not mean „Du darfst nicht teilnehmen“. Removing an obligation does not create a ban.
Nicht müssen / nicht brauchen … zu = no obligation. Nicht dürfen = prohibition. Es sei denn introduces a specific exception, not an established fact.
Write 180–220 German words explaining a fictional team agreement: a briefing is compulsory for the on-duty team, optional for others, and confidential documents may not be posted in a public channel. Include an exception for urgent deployment, identify who informs absent colleagues and use es sei denn accurately.
