Asking for help at work

Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?

Make a polite request, respond clearly and agree on a time.

Könnten Sie …? and Könntest du …? make a request more polite: Könnten Sie mir die Aufgabe erklären? Use the infinitive at the end; mir identifies the person receiving the explanation. Würden Sie bitte …? is another useful request pattern with an infinitive. A reply can accept (Gern.), delay with a clear time (Ich kann erst um zwei.) or decline politely with a reason. Bis Freitag is a deadline; am Freitag is the day of the action.

Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?

Could you help me, please? (polite)

Könntest du die Liste prüfen?

Could you check the list? (familiar)

Würden Sie mir bitte die Datei schicken?

Would you send me the file, please?

Gern, ich mache das nach der Pause.

Gladly, I will do that after the break.

Leider kann ich erst um zwei helfen.

Unfortunately, I can only help from two o’clock.

Brauchen Sie die Antwort bis Freitag?

Do you need the answer by Friday?
