Passive alternatives: possibility, requirement and result

Distinguish what can be done, what is required and what is already in a resulting state. Similar-looking forms do not always preserve the same meaning.

Sich lassen + infinitive can describe possibility: Der Fehler lässt sich beheben means the fault can be corrected. In this reading, the fault does not permit an action or arrange a service. Use the bare infinitive, without adding werden to this construction.

Sein + zu + infinitive can express a requirement or a possibility depending on context. Laut Vorschrift ist der Antrag einzureichen clearly states a requirement; Der Text ist leicht zu verstehen describes ease of understanding. Do not mechanically translate every sein + zu as must.

Some established -bar adjectives describe a possibility: lesbar means readable, wiederherstellbar means recoverable. Word formation is not a licence to attach -bar freely to every verb. Learn natural forms and their meanings; an adjective such as lesbar does not say someone has already read the text.

Compare Die Tür lässt sich schließen (it can be closed), Die Tür ist zu schließen (in an instruction: it must be closed), and Die Tür ist geschlossen (a closed state). When reformulating, preserve possibility versus obligation, time and any necessary information about the actor.

FormBeispiel
MöglichkeitDer Fehler lässt sich beheben.
