Expanded participial attributes: unpack dense descriptions
Understand phrases such as die von der Behörde geprüften Unterlagen. Find the noun, identify who acts and turn the compact description into a relative clause when needed.
Start with the head noun: Unterlagen. The description before it says which documents are meant. Die von der Behörde geprüften Unterlagen corresponds here to documents that were checked by the authority. Keep von der Behörde attached to geprüft.
Partizip I often describes the noun as performing the action: die den Antrag prüfende Mitarbeiterin. Form prüfen → prüfend and add the adjective ending. The words den Antrag belong to prüfen, not to the main-clause verb ruft.
Partizip II can express a passive/result relation with suitable verbs: die geprüften Unterlagen. It is not always passive: die eingetroffenen Gäste are guests who have arrived. Nor can every verb form a natural Partizip II attribute with every noun.
The ending follows adjective declension: die prüfende Mitarbeiterin, mit der prüfenden Mitarbeiterin. In the work-plan context, noch zu klärende Fragen means questions still requiring clarification. A long attribute is not automatically better style: use a relative clause when it makes the actor or action clearer.
