Conditions and exceptions: define when a statement applies
Read provisos and exceptions accurately. A requirement being named is not proof that it has been met.
Falls, sofern and wenn can introduce conditions. Wir beginnen, sofern alle Unterlagen vorliegen links the start to the documents being available. The clause does not assert that the documents actually are available. In the practised subordinate clauses, the finite verb goes last.
Vorausgesetzt, dass makes a prerequisite explicit: vorausgesetzt, dass Sie sich anmelden. A form without dass can instead use main-clause word order: vorausgesetzt, Sie melden sich an. Do not combine the dass introduction with that second word order.
Es sei denn introduces an exception to a general plan or statement. Wir treffen uns draußen, es sei denn, es regnet sets rain apart as the exception. Without dass, the following clause can have verb-second order; with dass, use verb-final order. Do not drop the exception when summarising a rule.
Nur wenn marks a necessary condition: without clearance, starting is not permitted in the example. A necessary condition should not automatically be read as a guarantee that all other requirements are satisfied. Keep conditions, exceptions and actual evidence separate when reporting an instruction.
