Concession and hypothetical obstacles: preserve the difference
Distinguish an obstacle presented as real from one considered hypothetically. Express contrast through clauses, main-clause connectors or formal noun phrases.
Obwohl and obgleich typically present an obstacle as given: Obgleich die Frist kurz ist, prüfen wir sorgfältig. The checking happens despite the short deadline. Obgleich is more formal; replacing it with a causal connector such as weil would change the relationship.
Selbst wenn can introduce a hypothetical extreme case: Selbst wenn die Kosten stiegen, würden wir weitermachen. In the explicitly hypothetical context, this does not say costs have risen. Auch wenn can occur with real or hypothetical situations, so read the context rather than treating it as automatic proof either way.
Dennoch and gleichwohl can connect main clauses: Dennoch prüfen wir sorgfältig. The finite verb follows the initial connector. Obgleich instead introduces a subordinate clause with the finite verb at the end. Do not preserve the same word order when switching between these patterns.
Ungeachtet der kurzen Frist expresses the obstacle as a formal noun phrase with genitive in this exercise. Trotz can also form a nominal concession. When reformulating, preserve not only the contrast but also whether the obstacle is stated as real or merely supposed.
