Reported speech: Konjunktiv I
Formal reports often use Konjunktiv I to mark someone else’s words. It identifies the source of a statement without proving whether that statement is true or false.
Die Sprecherin erklärt, das Ergebnis sei noch offen reports the spokesperson’s statement. Common singular forms are sei, habe, komme, arbeite and könne. The exercises explicitly request Konjunktiv I when other moods would also be grammatical in a different context.
For a reported earlier action, use habe/sei with a participle: er habe gelesen; sie sei angekommen. For reported future: sie werde kommen. Do not automatically copy English backshift rules into German.
When Konjunktiv I is identical to indicative, a Konjunktiv II replacement is common: sie sagen, sie hätten nichts gesehen, rather than the ambiguous sie haben. This replacement does not automatically mean an unreal past or an accusation of lying.
Indirect speech also occurs in indicative, especially in conversation. Adjust person, place and time expressions to the reporting context. With dass, use final-verb order: sie sagt, dass sie bereit sei. Without dass, the reported clause may keep verb-second order.
| Form | Beispiel |
|---|---|
| sein, er / sie | er sei · sie sei |
| haben, er / sie | er habe · sie habe |
| Präsens, er / sie | er arbeite · sie komme |
