Proportional clauses: je … desto / umso

Relate two changing degrees or quantities: the later the start, the less time remains. Je introduces a subordinate clause; desto or umso introduces the corresponding comparative phrase.

In Je später wir beginnen, desto weniger Zeit bleibt, beginnen closes the je clause. The whole phrase desto weniger Zeit comes before the finite verb bleibt. Do not place the subject between desto and its comparative phrase.

Desto and umso can both supply the matching part: Je genauer wir lesen, desto/umso mehr Fragen entstehen. A task must not mark one of these two as wrong where both fit. Comparative forms can indicate an increase or a decrease: mehr, weniger, leichter, schwieriger.

The main clause can also come first: Die Entscheidung fällt umso schwerer, je weniger Informationen vorliegen. In that order the main clause keeps its normal verb position and the je clause still has a final verb. The common je-first teaching pattern is not the only possible standard order.

The comparative may modify a noun: je klarere Kriterien and desto gezieltere Fragen. Adjective endings still follow the noun phrase; klarere is accusative plural without an article in our example. Keep the entire comparative phrase together.

The construction expresses a claimed relationship, not its scientific proof, inevitability or a precise linear ratio. For example, having more data does not automatically make every decision better. Familiar short expressions also use je … je, but the productive pattern practised here is je … desto/umso.

Examples

Je später wir beginnen, desto weniger Zeit bleibt bis zur festen Frist.

The later we start, the less time remains before the fixed deadline.

Beginnen ends the je clause; bleibt follows the complete comparative phrase desto weniger Zeit.

Je mehr Zeit wir einplanen, umso gründlicher können wir die Daten prüfen.

The more time we allow, the more thoroughly we can review the data.

Mehr and gründlicher express linked degrees. Können is the finite verb in the main clause.

Die Entscheidung fällt umso schwerer, je weniger Informationen vorliegen.

The decision becomes harder the less information is available.

The main clause comes first; the following je clause still ends with vorliegen.

Je klarere Kriterien wir festlegen, desto gezieltere Fragen können wir stellen.

The clearer the criteria we establish, the more targeted the questions we can ask.

Klarere and gezieltere modify plural nouns without an article; the noun phrases retain their endings.
