Modal verbs in the perfect: two infinitives and word order

Build forms such as habe arbeiten müssen and recognise why haben moves before the two infinitives in the subordinate-clause pattern.

With another infinitive, a core modal verb normally appears as an infinitive in the perfect: Ich habe arbeiten müssen. This is called Ersatzinfinitiv because müssen replaces the participle gemusst. The main verb also stays in the infinitive: arbeiten, not gearbeitet. These exercises practise the standard pattern; regional variants exist.

This perfect construction uses haben even when the main verb alone would use sein: Ich bin gegangen, but Ich habe gehen müssen. Only the auxiliary agrees with the subject: wir haben gehen dürfen. The modal still expresses necessity, permission or ability according to the context.

In a subordinate clause with this perfect construction, the finite form of haben precedes the two infinitives: weil sie länger hat bleiben müssen. This is an exception to the simple “finite verb always last” shortcut. Do not transfer it to an ordinary clause such as weil sie geblieben ist.

Without another infinitive, a modal can use its participle: Das habe ich nicht gewollt. In everyday reports, the Präteritum is often shorter: Ich musste arbeiten. Distinguish this past necessity from Ich muss gearbeitet haben, which in the relevant context is a present inference about the past.

FormBeispiel
Perfekt mit weiterem InfinitivSie hat länger bleiben müssen.
auch bei Bewegungsverben: habenEr hat früher gehen müssen.
Nebensatz mit haben vor zwei Infinitiven… weil sie länger hat bleiben müssen.
ohne weiteren InfinitivDas habe ich nicht gewollt.

Examples

Ich habe gestern länger arbeiten müssen.

I had to work longer yesterday.

Arbeiten is followed by the replacement infinitive müssen.

Wir haben früher nach Hause gehen dürfen.

We were allowed to go home earlier.

The modal perfect uses haben even with gehen.

Sie kam später, weil sie länger hat bleiben müssen.

She came later because she had to stay longer.

In this subordinate verb group, hat precedes bleiben müssen.

Das habe ich nicht gewollt.

I did not want that.

There is no further infinitive, so gewollt is the participle.
