Konjunktiv II: unreal past situations

Imagine a past that did not happen, or express regret. Use hätte or wäre with a past participle, following the auxiliary choice of the perfect tense.

Wenn ich die Nachricht gelesen hätte, wäre ich früher gekommen imagines a different past. It is not a factual report that I read the message and came early.

For verbs with haben in the perfect, use hätte: hätte gelesen, hätte gefunden. For verbs with sein, use wäre: wäre gekommen, wäre geblieben. Remaining with bleiben uses sein too; movement alone is not a complete rule for auxiliary choice.

In a wenn-clause, the conjugated auxiliary comes last: wenn wir früher losgefahren wären. In the main clause it occupies the conjugated position: Wir wären … angekommen.

Hätte ich doch …! expresses a wish about the past. An deiner Stelle hätte ich … gives retrospective advice. This topic avoids modal perfect clusters, which need additional rules.

FormBeispiel
haben → hätte + Partizip IIIch hätte den Bericht gelesen.
sein → wäre + Partizip IIIch wäre früher gekommen.
Bedingung in der VergangenheitWenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, …
Folge in der Vergangenheit…, hätte ich den Bericht gelesen.
