Futur I and II: future time or a present/past assumption?

A form with werden does not always describe the future. Time expressions and context show whether the speaker predicts an event or makes an assumption.

Futur I uses a finite form of werden plus an infinitive: Wir werden die Unterlagen senden. With morgen, this points to the future. Present tense can also express future plans with an appropriate time expression; these exercises ask for Futur I explicitly when testing its form.

With jetzt or gerade, wird … sein/arbeiten can express an assumption about the present. Wohl often supports that reading: Mara wird jetzt wohl im Büro sein. This is a judgement about where she probably is, not proof or a command.

Futur II uses werden + past participle + haben or sein: geprüft haben, angekommen sein. Choose haben/sein as in the corresponding active Perfekt: wir haben geprüft; die Gäste sind angekommen. In a main clause the finite werden stands in its usual position, while the participle and final infinitive complete the bracket.

Bis Freitag … geprüft haben predicts completion by a future reference point. Gestern wohl … vergessen haben expresses a present assumption about a past event. The form alone does not determine which time reading applies, and a prediction is not a guarantee. Always retain the source’s degree of certainty in a summary.

Distinguish active Futur I from passive: Die Technikerin wird prüfen contains an infinitive; Das Gerät wird geprüft contains a past participle and is present passive. This topic practises active forms, not every possible combination of tense and voice.

FormBeispiel
Futur I: ZukunftWir werden den Bericht morgen prüfen.
Futur I: Vermutung über jetztMara wird jetzt wohl im Büro sein.
Futur II: vor einem künftigen ZeitpunktBis Freitag werden wir alle Anträge geprüft haben.
Futur II: Vermutung über VergangenesEr wird den Termin gestern wohl vergessen haben.

Examples

Mara wird jetzt wohl im Büro sein.

Mara is probably in the office now.

Jetzt and wohl make this an assumption about the present.

Bis Freitag werden wir alle Anträge geprüft haben.

By Friday we will have checked all the applications.

The checking is expected to be complete by Friday; it is not stated as completed now.

Er wird den Termin gestern wohl vergessen haben.

He probably forgot the appointment yesterday.

Gestern anchors the event in the past; wohl keeps it an assumption.

Die Gäste werden bis morgen Abend angekommen sein.

The guests will have arrived by tomorrow evening.

Ankommen uses sein in the active Perfekt, so the final infinitive is sein.
