Purpose: um … zu and damit
Explain what an action aims to achieve. Use um … zu for the understood actor in these examples; damit has its own subject and a conjugated verb.
Ich lese laut, um meine Aussprache zu verbessern gives the aim of reading aloud. The understood person improving their pronunciation is ich. Do not repeat ich inside this infinitive clause.
When two different people do the actions, make this explicit with damit: Ich erkläre es, damit du es verstehst. The conjugated verb comes last. Damit is also possible with the same subject: Ich schreibe es auf, damit ich es nicht vergesse.
With separable verbs, put zu inside the infinitive: anzukommen, aufzustehen. With a modal in a damit-clause, put the modal last: damit alle folgen können.
Purpose is an intended outcome, not a guarantee that it happens. Distinguish a reason with weil from an aim with um … zu or damit. The simple subject pattern taught here is a useful starting point, not a claim about every possible infinitive construction.
| Form | Beispiel |

| damit + Subjekt | Ich erkläre es, damit du es verstehst. |
| trennbares Verb | Ich stehe früh auf, um einzukaufen. |
| Modalverb | Ich spreche langsam, damit alle folgen können. |
