Past events in order: Plusquamperfekt and time clauses

Explain what had already happened before another past moment. Keep the order of events separate from the order of clauses.

Form the Plusquamperfekt with hatte/war + Partizip II: hatte ausgefüllt, war abgefahren. Choose haben or sein as in the corresponding perfect construction. It marks an event before a past reference point, not simply an event that happened a very long time ago.

In our past narrative, nachdem introduces the earlier completed event: Nachdem ich bezahlt hatte, ging ich hinaus. Bevor introduces the later step: Bevor ich unterschrieb, las ich den Vertrag. Bevor does not itself force Plusquamperfekt; the example can use Präteritum in both clauses because the connector makes the order clear.

Während can express temporal overlap: while waiting, I read a message. Here we practise its temporal meaning, not its contrastive use. Als can locate a single past situation; the train example uses Plusquamperfekt to show that the departure was already over when I arrived.

A subordinate clause beginning with nachdem, bevor or während has the finite verb at the end. When that clause comes first, the main-clause finite verb follows it: Nachdem … hatte, schickte ich … . Danach is different: it is an adverb within a main clause, so Danach schickte ich … .

FormBeispiel
Plusquamperfekt mit habenIch hatte den Antrag ausgefüllt.
Plusquamperfekt mit seinDer Zug war abgefahren.
vor einem vergangenen ZeitpunktAls ich ankam, war der Zug schon abgefahren.
bevor: späterer Schritt im NebensatzIch prüfte die Adresse, bevor ich den Brief abschickte.

Examples

Nachdem ich den Antrag ausgefüllt hatte, schickte ich ihn ab.

After I had filled in the application, I sent it off.

Filling in happens before sending; hatte ausgefüllt marks the earlier past event.

Als ich am Bahnhof ankam, war der Zug schon abgefahren.

When I arrived at the station, the train had already left.

War abgefahren places the departure before the arrival.

Bevor ich den Brief abschickte, prüfte ich die Adresse.

Before I sent the letter off, I checked the address.

The bevor-clause names the later step, despite appearing first.

Während ich wartete, las ich eine Nachricht.

While I was waiting, I read a message.

Während expresses overlapping time here.
