Passive: actions in the present and past

Put the action or its recipient in focus: Die Rechnung wird geprüft. Use werden plus a past participle for the action passive; ist geschlossen describes a state.

Compare Die Ärztin untersucht den Patienten with Der Patient wird untersucht. The active accusative object becomes the passive subject, so den Patienten becomes der Patient.

In the present, use wird for a singular subject and werden for a plural subject. In the simple past, use wurde or wurden. The participle keeps its form: geprüft, untersucht, abgeholt.

Name the person carrying out the action with von plus dative when useful: von einer Ärztin. It can be omitted when unknown or irrelevant. Passive is not possible in exactly the same way with every verb; these examples practise personal passive with suitable verbs.

Die Tür wird geschlossen focuses on the closing action. Die Tür ist geschlossen describes its resulting state. Do not infer a past passive action merely from ist. The next passive topic covers ist geschlossen worden.
