Konjunktiv II: wishes, advice and polite requests
Imagine a different present or future, give advice or soften a request. Hätte, wäre and könnte are useful forms; many other verbs use würde plus an infinitive.
Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen describes an imagined situation, not a confirmed past event. Despite its connection with past-tense forms, Konjunktiv II can refer to the present or future.
Haben → hätte, sein → wäre, können → könnte. Compare hatte/konnte, which can report past facts, with hätte/könnte. The umlaut changes the form and its meaning.
In a main clause, conjugate würde and put the infinitive at the end: Wir würden morgen kommen. If a wenn-clause comes first, the main-clause verb follows it immediately: Wenn …, würde ich … .
Könnten Sie …? is a polite request; Könnten alone does not describe past ability. An deiner Stelle würde ich … gives advice. Indicative requests can also be polite; the exercises explicitly ask for Konjunktiv II where that distinction matters.
| Form | Beispiel |
|---|---|
| haben → hätte | Ich hätte gern mehr Zeit. |
| sein → wäre | Das wäre hilfreich. |
| können → könnte | Könnten Sie langsamer sprechen? |
| würde + Infinitiv | Wir würden morgen kommen. |
