Reporting illness at work

Krank melden bei der Arbeit

Say that you are ill, cannot work today and will give an update later.

Use Ich bin krank to state that you are ill and Ich kann heute nicht arbeiten to say you cannot work. Ich melde mich später noch einmal promises another update. Voraussichtlich marks an expectation rather than certainty. These phrases do not replace workplace reporting rules. Review bin, kann ... arbeiten and the formal Sie question. Gute Besserung is a wish for someone to get well. Wann melden Sie sich wieder? asks when you will get in touch again; it does not ask for a guaranteed return-to-work date.

Ich bin krank.

I am ill.

Ich kann heute nicht arbeiten.

I cannot work today.

Ich gehe zum Arzt.

I am going to the doctor.

Ich melde mich später noch einmal.

I will get in touch again later.

Voraussichtlich komme ich morgen.

I expect to come tomorrow.

Danke für Ihr Verständnis.

Thank you for your understanding.

Krank is a describing word and goes with bin. Kann changes with ich; arbeiten keeps its full form at the end. In Ich melde mich, learn melde and mich together as the expression for getting in touch.

The message separates today’s situation from a possible return tomorrow. Voraussichtlich prevents an estimate from sounding like a certainty. This lesson supplies language, not legal or company-policy instructions.

Do not say Ich habe krank. Use bin with krank, but habe with a symptom noun such as Halsschmerzen. Use kann, not können, with ich in this sentence.

Ill: bin krank. Unable to work: kann nicht arbeiten. Update: melde mich. Expected: voraussichtlich. Keep certainty and expectation distinct.

Read a fictional short message aloud, then add the polite closing Danke für Ihr Verständnis. Keep the expected return separate from what you know for certain.
