Wo or wohin?

Wo oder wohin?

Distinguish where someone or something is from where it is going.

Wo? asks for a location: Wo bist du? Wohin? asks for a destination: Wohin gehst du? Compare in der Küche with in die Küche.

Wo bist du?

Where are you?

Ich bin im Supermarkt.

I am in the supermarket.

Wohin gehst du?

Where are you going?

Ich gehe zum Arzt.

I am going to the doctor.

Wohin fährt der Bus?

Where is the bus going?

Der Bus fährt zum Bahnhof.

The bus is going to the station.

Choose the form from the meaning. A location with a two-way preposition uses the dative; a destination into a place uses the accusative. Zu always takes the dative: zum Arzt, zum Bahnhof.

Ask where a person is, where they are going, and where a bus is heading.

With du, the verb is gehst. Wohin gehe du? mixes the ich form gehe with du.

Wo = where, fixed location. Wohin = where to, destination. Zum = zu dem.

Ask and answer two Wo? questions and two Wohin? questions using places you know.
