You can take part in class even when you need help. Name the problem with Ich verstehe die Aufgabe nicht, then ask Können Sie das erklären? Use Welche Seite? to find the right page.

I have a question.
Ich verstehe die Aufgabe nicht.
I do not understand the task.
Können Sie das erklären?
Can you explain that?
Wie sagt man das auf Deutsch?
How do you say that in German?
Ich mache die Hausaufgaben.
I am doing the homework.
In Können Sie das erklären?, können comes first and erklären stays at the end. In Ich verstehe die Aufgabe nicht, nicht makes the statement negative.
If the class starts an exercise you do not understand, ask about the task before guessing an answer.
Having a question is not the same as understanding the task. Say exactly what needs explaining; a request for help is normal classroom German.
Seite = page, Frage = question, Aufgabe = task. These three nouns help you ask for the right kind of help.
Ask for the page, say you do not understand the task, and ask your teacher to explain it.
