Telephone calls and messages
Telefonieren und Nachrichten
Open a telephone call, ask for someone, leave a message, and request a return call.
On the phone there are no gestures, so identify yourself and use clear complete requests. “Hier ist …” is a natural way to say who is calling.
Hallo, hier ist Laura.
Hello, Laura speaking.
Kann ich mit Frau Müller sprechen?
May I speak to Ms Müller?
Einen Moment bitte.
One moment, please.
Sie ist gerade nicht da.
She is not here right now.
Kann ich eine Nachricht hinterlassen?
May I leave a message?
Bitte rufen Sie mich zurück.
Please call me back.
Ich schicke dir eine Nachricht.
I will send you a message.
Bis später.
See you later.
Use “Kann ich mit … sprechen?” to ask for a person and polite Sie-imperatives for requests such as “Rufen Sie mich zurück.”
These forms help with appointments, work calls, and messages when someone is unavailable.
Do not begin with only your name; “Hallo, hier ist …” makes your role as caller clear.
Identify yourself → ask for the person → leave a message → close the call.
Role-play a call in which Frau Müller is unavailable and you leave a callback request.
