C2 editing: limits, conditions and the scope of a claim
A precise report says not only what applies, but also how far it applies and what the writer actually knows. Preserve those boundaries when shortening a text.
Soweit ich die Akten überblicke limits the statement to the writer’s current overview. It does not certify that every possible document has been checked. Here soweit marks a limit of knowledge; the expression can have other uses in other contexts.
Sofern introduces a condition: Wir verlängern, sofern die Finanzierung gesichert ist. This does not say that funding is already secure. Replacing sofern with weil turns the condition into a stated reason and changes the claim.
Insofern …, als … can specify the respect in which a judgement applies. Saying that a draft is convincing because it separates responsibilities clearly does not by itself endorse every other feature. In the explicitly restrictive pattern nur insoweit …, als …, retain the stated limit of applicability.
In these subordinate clauses the finite verb comes at the end. If the entire subordinate clause comes first, it occupies the first position before the main clause’s finite verb: Sofern die Unterlagen vorliegen, beginnt die Prüfung. C2 editing involves controlling the meaning and register of such patterns; the structures themselves are not exclusive to C2.
