B2

Free relative clauses: wer, wen, wem and the main clause

Describe people by a condition or action without naming them. Choose each pronoun according to its role in its own clause.

Wer eine Rückfrage hat, der kann uns schreiben means that any person with a follow-up question can write. This wer-clause generalises about people; it does not ask for someone’s identity. Compare the indirect question Ich weiß nicht, wer heute kommt.

The verb inside the relative clause determines the first pronoun’s role: wer has a question (subject); wen wir einladen is the person we invite (accusative object); wem ein Nachweis fehlt is the person who lacks a document (dative with fehlen). The finite verb goes at the end of the relative clause.

The main clause has its own requirements. In Wem ein Nachweis fehlt, der erhält eine Erinnerung, der is the subject of erhält. In Wer Unterstützung braucht, dem hilft das Team, dem is the dative object of hilft. Do not copy the case from the first clause automatically.

A preposition also governs its own case: Wer Zeit hat, mit dem vereinbaren wir einen Termin uses mit + dative. The returning d-pronoun links the person described in the first clause to the main clause; here it is not an article followed by a noun.

In Wer sich anmeldet, (der) erhält eine Bestätigung, der can be omitted. This does not mean every returning pronoun is optional: retain dem in Wer Unterstützung braucht, dem hilft das Team and mit dem in the example above. A comma separates the clauses. The exercise examples deliberately keep the case relationships clear.
