Modal verbs in the past: konnte, musste, durfte
Describe past ability, necessity, permission and intention with a past modal verb and an infinitive. The negative meaning matters: musste nicht means there was no need, whereas durfte nicht means it was not permitted.
Start with the present-tense modal pattern. For the past, change the modal itself: Ich muss arbeiten → Ich musste arbeiten. The other verb stays in the infinitive. With ich and er/sie/es, use konnte, musste, durfte, wollte or sollte without an extra personal ending.
Konnte, musste and durfte have no umlaut. Könnte, müsste and dürfte are different forms: Konjunktiv II. They do not simply report the same past facts. This topic practises actual past situations, not hypothetical possibilities.
Read the whole situation. Nicht müssen removes an obligation; nicht dürfen removes permission. A person who did not have to come could still choose to come. Sollen can express someone else’s instruction: Wir sollten früher anfangen. Here that instruction is supplied in the context.
Keep normal sentence order: Gestern musste ich arbeiten. In a yes/no question: Musstest du arbeiten? Past modals are common in conversation, but other past constructions exist. A full account of modal meanings and the double infinitive belongs to later study.

Musste reports a past obligation; arbeiten remains an infinitive.
Wir durften den Raum nicht betreten.
We were not allowed to enter the room.
Durften nicht expresses a lack of permission, not a lack of necessity.
Du musstest gestern nicht kommen.
You did not have to come yesterday.
Musstest nicht means coming was unnecessary, not forbidden.
Ich konnte nicht anrufen, weil mein Handy kaputt war.
I could not phone because my mobile phone was broken.
Konnte reports a past possibility prevented by a broken phone.
