Fixed accusative prepositions: für, ohne, durch, gegen and um

Durch, für, gegen, ohne and um take accusative in these prepositional uses. The case stays accusative when the situation is stationary as well as when there is movement.

Accusative articles are den for masculine, die for feminine, das for neuter and die for plural. Masculine ein/mein becomes einen/meinen. Compare für meinen Bruder with für meine Schwester and für das Kind. Pronouns also change: für mich, ohne dich, gegen ihn.

Durch describes a route through something; um can describe a route around it. Für can mark an intended recipient or purpose; ohne means without. These meanings help you choose the preposition. Once it is chosen, the preposition determines the case.

Gegen can describe contact or opposition: gegen die Wand, gegen den Vorschlag. With a clock time, gegen means approximately: gegen acht Uhr. It does not mean a deadline. Um acht Uhr states a scheduled time. The same word can have a different meaning in a different context.

Do not generalise the rule for two-way prepositions such as in and auf to this group. Das Geschenk liegt hier für meinen Bruder has no moving gift, yet für takes accusative. Conversely, zu takes dative even for a destination. Learn meaning and case together.
