Interpret a narrator without inventing certainty
Erzählstimme und begründete Deutung unterscheiden
Distinguish narrated events, a narrator’s claims and a reader’s evidence-based interpretation.
A first-person account does not automatically provide an objective view of every event or access to other characters’ thoughts. Here the narrator’s claim that nothing changed conflicts with details he supplies. That supports a hypothesis about selective memory, but does not prove one final psychological explanation. An open ending permits several supported readings, not arbitrary claims. Use lässt sich als … lesen to mark an interpretation and cite the textual observation supporting it.
Die Behauptung des Erzählers widerspricht seinen eigenen Beobachtungen.
The narrator’s claim contradicts his own observations.
Die Erzählung gewährt keinen direkten Einblick in ihre Gedanken.
The narrative gives no direct access to her thoughts.
Die Geste lässt sich als Zögern lesen.
The gesture can be read as hesitation.
Diese Lesart wird durch konkrete Textstellen gestützt.
This reading is supported by specific passages.
Das offene Ende legt keine endgültige Entscheidung fest.
The open ending does not establish a final decision.
Eine plausible Deutung ist nicht mit einer bewiesenen Tatsache gleichzusetzen.
A plausible interpretation is not equivalent to a proven fact.

Distinguish narrated events, a narrator’s claims and a reader’s evidence-based interpretation.
Do not label every contradiction an authorial mistake, present the neighbour’s thoughts as known, or treat an unreported later action as a settled ending.
Keep three layers apart: explicit event, character’s assertion and reader’s inference. A modal formulation such as könnte or lässt sich … deuten marks interpretive status; it does not remove the need for evidence.
Write a 250–300-word German interpretation. Use two concrete textual observations, distinguish narrator and author, propose a cautious reading of the final gesture and acknowledge an alternative supported interpretation.
