Reconstruct the order behind a travel story
Eine Reise in zeitlicher Ordnung erzählen
Use the past perfect to show an earlier event and distinguish narrative order from event order.
A story can begin at its most surprising moment and only then explain what happened earlier. Das Schiff war schon abgefahren, als wir den Hafen erreichten places departure before arrival. The Plusquamperfekt combines hatte or war with a past participle; the auxiliary normally follows the same choice as in the Perfekt. Wir hatten die Fahrkarte gekauft contrasts with wir waren zum Hafen gefahren. Nachdem introduces the earlier event in this past narrative: Nachdem wir die Nachricht gelesen hatten, änderten wir den Plan. Do not infer chronology from sentence position alone. Track time expressions, verb forms and connectors together. A later explanation may refer to an earlier decision rather than the next action.
Das Schiff war bereits abgefahren, als wir den Hafen erreichten.
The boat had already left when we reached the harbour.
Wir hatten die Fahrkarten am Montag gekauft.
We had bought the tickets on Monday.
Am Dienstag war die Abfahrt auf halb zehn vorverlegt worden.
On Tuesday, the departure had been brought forward to half past nine.
Wir lasen die Nachricht erst am Mittwoch um zwanzig vor zehn.
We did not read the message until twenty to ten on Wednesday.
Nachdem wir die Änderung verstanden hatten, suchten wir eine Alternative.
After we had understood the change, we looked for an alternative.
Um elf nahmen wir schließlich das nächste Schiff.
At eleven, we finally took the next boat.

Do not assume the first sentence reports the first event, or use hatte with every verb of movement.
Earlier past: hatte/war + Partizip II. Identify the reference event and use time expressions as well as verb forms to reconstruct the sequence.
Write a 180–220-word German travel account using this fictional sequence: tickets bought Monday; departure moved on Tuesday from 10:00 to 09:30; message read Wednesday at 09:40; arrival at the harbour 09:50; next boat taken at 11:00. Begin with the missed boat, then explain the earlier events. Do not claim the travellers received or read the message before the stated reading time.
