Describe a sequence of actions
Abläufe beschreiben
Describe a short process in order using zuerst, dann, danach and am Ende, keeping the finite verb in second position.
Before this lesson: recognise present-tense ich forms and the verb-second pattern in statements. Describe one visit in order: Zuerst öffne ich die Tür. Dann gehe ich hinein. Danach warte ich. Am Ende gehe ich nach Hause. Zuerst means first, dann means then, danach means after that and am Ende means at the end. Dann and danach do not have fixed step numbers: another step can also begin with dann or danach. When a sequencing expression comes first, the finite verb comes next: Zuerst | öffne | ich | die Tür. Am Ende is a two-word expression but occupies one position: Am Ende | gehe | ich | nach Hause. Second position does not mean the second individual word. Open is öffnen, enter/go inside is hineingehen, wait is warten and go home is nach Hause gehen. In Dann gehe ich hinein, the separable part hinein goes at the end. Nach Hause describes a destination, unlike zu Hause, which describes being at home. You can also say Ich öffne zuerst die Tür.; it preserves the sequence meaning with a different opening.
Zuerst öffne ich die Tür.
First I open the door.
Dann gehe ich hinein.
Then I go inside.
Danach warte ich.
After that I wait.
Am Ende gehe ich nach Hause.
At the end I go home.
Decide which action is first and which ends the process. Build each statement separately: time expression, finite verb, ich, then the remaining words.
Explain a visit to an office: open the door, go in, wait and finally go home. Do not place the waiting step before entry unless that is really the process you mean.
Zuerst ich öffne die Tür. puts the finite verb too late in a normal statement. Use Zuerst öffne ich die Tür. or Ich öffne zuerst die Tür.
An opening such as Am Ende is one unit. The verb follows the whole unit, not its first word.
Describe a four-step visit without looking at the models. Check the action order and circle the finite verb in each statement.
