In der Apotheke
Describe a simple symptom and ask the pharmacist questions about using a medicine.
Say what the symptom is: Ich habe Halsschmerzen. Add how long it has continued with seit: Ich habe seit zwei Tagen Husten. Ask wie oft for how often and wie lange for how long. These phrases help you ask questions; they do not tell you which medicine or dose to use. Before the questions, review ich habe, polite Haben Sie ...? and seit for a condition continuing until now. Was haben Sie? asks what symptoms you have. Haben Sie auch Halsschmerzen? asks whether you also have a sore throat. This lesson practises communication, not diagnosis, treatment or a medicine dose.
Ich habe Halsschmerzen.
I have a sore throat.
Ich habe seit zwei Tagen Husten.
I have had a cough for two days.
Haben Sie etwas dagegen?
Do you have anything for that?
Wie oft nehme ich das?
How often do I take this?
Vor oder nach dem Essen?
Before or after food?
Brauche ich ein Rezept?
Do I need a prescription?
Use habe with the nouns Halsschmerzen and Husten. Seit links an earlier start with now: seit zwei Tagen. Keep the present form habe in this German sentence. In Haben Sie etwas dagegen?, the verb comes first because it is a yes/no question.
After describing a symptom, Haben Sie etwas dagegen? asks the pharmacist about something for it. Wie oft nehme ich das? and Vor oder nach dem Essen? ask for information; neither phrase supplies a dose or schedule.
Ich bin Halsschmerzen is not the German expression for a sore throat. Use Ich habe Halsschmerzen. For the continuing duration here, use seit zwei Tagen, not für zwei Tagen.
Symptom: Ich habe … . Duration: seit … . Frequency: Wie oft …? Prescription: ein Rezept. Keep each question with the information it asks for.
Describe a lesson symptom and ask three different questions about the medicine being discussed. Practise the questions without making up treatment advice.
