Personal pronouns in everyday life

Personalpronomen im Alltag

Match everyday pronouns with their verb forms and distinguish informal du from formal Sie.

Pronouns identify who acts: ich means I, du informal singular you, er he, sie she, and wir we. Formal Sie means you and takes a different verb form from du.

Ich komme aus Thailand.

I come from Thailand.

Du kommst morgen.

You are coming tomorrow.

Er arbeitet nachts.

He works at night.

Sie lernt Deutsch.

She is learning German.

Wir wohnen hier.

We live here.

Kommen Sie bitte mit.

Please come along.

Compare du kommst with formal Sie kommen. At the start of a sentence, Sie may also mean she; the verb helps: Sie lernt means she learns, while Sie lernen can mean formal you learn.

Use du with someone you address informally and Sie when a formal form is appropriate. Match the verb to the person each time.

Du requires kommst, not komme. A formal instruction is Kommen Sie bitte mit, not Kommt Sie bitte mit.

Ich komme; du kommst; wir kommen; Sie kommen. In a formal instruction: Kommen Sie …

Introduce yourself, say what a friend does, and make one polite request with Sie.
