mit, bei, aus, zu and in
Mit, bei, aus, zu und in
Use common prepositions to describe transport, company, origin, location, and destinations.
Learn these prepositions with their nouns: mit dem Bus, bei der Arbeit, aus dem Supermarkt. Mit, bei, aus, and zu take the dative. In can take the dative for location or the accusative for a destination.
Ich fahre mit dem Bus.
I am travelling by bus.
Ich bin bei der Arbeit.
I am at work.
Ich komme aus dem Supermarkt.
I am coming from the supermarket.
Ich gehe zum Arzt.
I am going to the doctor.
Ich bin in der Küche.
I am in the kitchen.
Ich gehe in die Küche.
I am going into the kitchen.
Ich spreche mit meiner Kollegin.
I am speaking with my colleague.
Die Apotheke ist neben dem Bahnhof.
The pharmacy is next to the station.
Compare in der Küche (in the kitchen) and in die Küche (into the kitchen). The distinction is location versus destination, not movement versus no movement. Zum combines zu + dem.
Explain how you travel, where you are, where you are coming from, and where you want to go.
Do not use in die Küche for being in the kitchen. Equally, zu takes the dative even when you are going somewhere: zum Arzt.
Mit dem Bus; bei der Arbeit; zum Arzt. In der Küche = where; in die Küche = where to.
Describe one journey, your current location, and a destination using the lesson phrases.
