Place and direction: Wo? or Wohin?
With two-way prepositions such as in, an and auf, use dative for a location and accusative for a destination or placement.
Wo? asks where something is: in der Küche.
Wohin? asks where someone or something goes: in die Küche.
A change caused by stellen, legen or hängen uses a destination: auf den Tisch, an die Wand.
Movement alone is not the rule: a person can walk in a park and still describe location. Decide whether the phrase answers Wo? or Wohin?.
Wir sind im Wohnzimmer.
Wir gehen ins Wohnzimmer.
Ich stelle die Tasse auf den Tisch.
