Negation with nicht and kein

Use kein with a noun that would have ein/eine or no article. Use nicht to negate a verb, adjective or the statement as a whole.

kein changes like ein: kein Auto, keine Zeit, keinen Kaffee.

nicht can negate an adjective: nicht heiß.

To negate an activity, nicht commonly comes after the time/object area shown here: Ich arbeite heute nicht.

A definite noun is normally negated with nicht, for example nicht der Bus, when a contrast is intended.

Ich habe kein Auto.

Ich arbeite heute nicht.

Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß.
