Modal verbs: can, must, would like
A modal verb shows ability, necessity or intention. It is conjugated in position 2; the second verb stays in the infinitive at the end.
können expresses ability or possibility: ich kann.
müssen expresses necessity: du musst.
möchten is the polite form for what someone would like.
In a yes/no question, the modal comes first: Kannst du …?
Ich kann heute kommen.
Du musst morgen arbeiten.
Sie möchte einen Tee bestellen.
