Adjective endings after der and ein
An adjective before a noun changes its ending. Choose the noun’s gender, number and case, then consider the article. An adjective after sein usually has no ending: Das Zimmer ist ruhig.
Start with small contrasts: der neue Mantel, ein neuer Mantel; das kleine Zimmer, ein kleines Zimmer. In nominative masculine and neuter, ein has no visible gender ending, so the adjective carries -er or -es. Feminine uses -e in both die ruhige Wohnung and eine ruhige Wohnung.
Accusative masculine changes the whole phrase: der neue Mantel → den neuen Mantel; ein neuer Mantel → einen neuen Mantel. Feminine and neuter keep the nominative forms in these examples: eine warme Suppe, ein kleines Zimmer.
After a definite article or an ein-word, the adjective uses -en in the dative forms practised here: mit dem neuen Mantel, in einem ruhigen Zimmer, mit den neuen Schuhen. The dative plural noun may also need -n, as in Schuhen.
Plural after die or keine uses -en: die neuen Schuhe, keine neuen Schuhe. There is no plural indefinite article ein. Phrases without an article follow a different pattern, such as neue Schuhe; this introductory topic does not teach the full strong-declension table.
Compare position: ein ruhiges Zimmer has an adjective before the noun; Das Zimmer ist ruhig has a predicative adjective after sein and no declension ending. Do not add -es simply because Zimmer is neuter.
