Following a short route description
Hinter der Brücke biegen wir links ab.
Keep landmarks and turns in order and distinguish the route to a place from its location.
A short route description can be understood as a sequence of landmarks: zuerst bis zur Brücke, dann links, danach am Spielplatz vorbei. Bis zur Brücke tells you how far to continue; hinter der Brücke identifies the point beyond the bridge. Vor dem Café is a location; zum Café names a destination. Verbs such as abbiegen are separable: Wir biegen links ab. Read a temporary closure notice as well as the original route. If the main path is gesperrt, use only the alternative actually described. These fictional maps practise language; they are not navigation instructions for a real walk.
Wir gehen zuerst bis zur Brücke.
First we walk as far as the bridge.
Hinter der Brücke biegen wir links ab.
After the bridge we turn left.
Dann gehen wir am Spielplatz vorbei.
Then we walk past the playground.
Das Café liegt neben dem Parkeingang.
The café is next to the park entrance.
Der Hauptweg ist heute gesperrt.
The main path is closed today.
Der Umweg führt rechts am See entlang.
The detour runs along the right side of the lake.

Do not confuse left with right or a meeting place before a bridge with a turn after it. A closure is not an instruction to continue on the closed path.
Landmark → turn → next landmark. Bis zur = as far as; am … vorbei = past; wir biegen … ab.
Draw a fictional route with a bridge, a café and a playground. Write four instructions and a separate sentence locating the meeting point.
