Making a plan with a condition

Wenn ich Zeit habe, übe ich.

State a realistic condition and understand which plan applies when circumstances change.

Wenn introduces a condition or a repeated situation: Wenn ich Zeit habe, übe ich. The conjugated verb goes at the end of the wenn-clause. When that whole clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb: Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause. You can also put the main clause first: Wir bleiben zu Hause, wenn es regnet. Wenn does not promise that the condition will happen. A plan for good weather is not the same as an unconditional booking. In this lesson we use realistic present or future situations. For one particular past event use the already learned als: Als ich gestern ankam, war es dunkel.

Wenn ich Zeit habe, übe ich.

If I have time, I practise.

Ich komme mit, wenn ich frei habe.

I will come along if I am free.

Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir drinnen.

If it rains, we stay indoors.

Wenn du eine Frage hast, schreib mir.

If you have a question, write to me.

Wir gehen zu Fuß, wenn das Wetter gut ist.

We will walk if the weather is good.

Sonst nehmen wir den Bus.

Otherwise we will take the bus.

After an initial wenn-clause, write übe ich, not ich übe. Keep a conditional plan separate from a confirmed event.

Wenn + subject + … + conjugated verb, main verb + subject + … . Ich übe, wenn ich Zeit habe.

Make two plans for the weekend: one for dry weather and one for rain. Say both using wenn, then ask a partner to choose a situation.
