Putting things in place
Ich stelle den Stuhl neben das Bett.
Distinguish where something is from where you put it, using common furniture and objects.
With two-way prepositions, a destination answers Wohin? and takes the accusative: Ich stelle den Stuhl neben das Bett. A location answers Wo? and takes the dative: Der Stuhl steht neben dem Bett. Learn these pairs: stellen → stehen for placing/standing upright; legen → liegen for laying/lying. Accusative articles are den, die, das and plural die. Movement alone does not decide the case: Ich gehe im Zimmer auf und ab describes movement within a room, not a new destination. Ich gehe ins Zimmer means entering the room.
Ich stelle den Stuhl neben das Bett.
I put the chair next to the bed.
Jetzt steht der Stuhl neben dem Bett.
Now the chair is next to the bed.
Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch.
I put the book on the table.
Jetzt liegt das Buch auf dem Tisch.
Now the book is on the table.
Wir bringen die Kisten ins Wohnzimmer.
We take the boxes into the living room.
Ich gehe im Zimmer auf und ab.
I walk up and down in the room.

Do not use the rule “movement always means accusative”. Decide whether the phrase names a destination or the place where an action happens.
Wohin? stellen/legen + accusative. Wo? stehen/liegen + dative. ins = in das.
Give three instructions for arranging a room. After each instruction, describe the new location: Ich lege … / Jetzt liegt …
