Describe where furniture and everyday objects are in a room.

For a location, ask Wo? With the two-way prepositions in, an, auf, unter, über, vor, hinter, neben and zwischen, use the dative for location: auf dem Tisch, neben der Tür. Der and das become dem; die becomes der. In the plural use den, usually with -n on the noun: zwischen den Stühlen. An existing plural ending in -n or -s gets no extra -n. Im means in dem. The location can come first: Neben dem Fenster steht der Tisch.

Der Tisch steht neben dem Fenster.

The table is next to the window.

Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.

The book is on the table.
