Invitations and meeting up

Lust haben und sich treffen

Invite a friend for coffee, arrange a time, decline today and suggest that tomorrow works.

Use Hast du Lust auf einen Kaffee? for a friendly invitation. Wir treffen uns um sechs gives a meeting time. Heute kann ich nicht declines today; Morgen passt es says tomorrow works. The planned activity can be understood from the conversation. Review the earlier invitation phrases, reflexive uns with wir and clock times with um. Treffen wir uns morgen um sechs am Abend? asks about a proposed meeting tomorrow at 18:00. The answer confirms the proposal; the time is not agreed before that answer.

Hast du Lust auf einen Kaffee?

Do you feel like having a coffee?

Wir treffen uns um sechs.

We are meeting at six.

Heute kann ich nicht.

I cannot today.

Morgen passt es.

Tomorrow works.

Use Lust auf with a noun phrase here. In Wir treffen uns, uns refers back to wir. After opening Heute or Morgen, the verb comes before the subject.

Today being unsuitable does not necessarily reject the invitation altogether. Morgen passt es offers another day. Clarify morning or evening if six is not clear from the conversation.

Hast du Lust einen Kaffee? is missing auf in this noun pattern. Heute kann du nicht also has the wrong person form: du needs kannst.

Invitation: Lust auf … ? Meeting: wir treffen uns. Decline today: heute nicht. Alternative: morgen.

Create a short invitation exchange using the four expressions in an order that makes sense. Agree on the day before treating the meeting time as settled.
