Bus and train: changing connections
Bus und Bahn: umsteigen
Say that you need to change, ask where to change and understand a train delay.
Use Ich muss umsteigen when your journey needs a change of bus or train. Ask Wo muss ich umsteigen? for the place. Der Zug hat Verspätung reports a delay, not a cancellation. Der Bahnsteig names the platform. Review muss + infinitive and location questions. Am Hauptbahnhof means at the main station; the dialogue names a fictional connection, not an actual route. Ist der Zug pünktlich? asks if the train is on time.
Ich muss umsteigen.
I have to change buses or trains.
Wo muss ich umsteigen?
Where do I have to change?
Der Zug hat Verspätung.
The train is delayed.
der Bahnsteig
the platform
Muss carries the verb form for ich. The second verb remains umsteigen at the end: Ich muss umsteigen. With wo, put muss before ich.
At a station you may need to ask where to change. A delay message gives different information from the place where you change or the platform name.
Do not say Ich muss umsteigt. Use the infinitive umsteigen after muss. With du, the modal verb would be musst, not muss.
Need to change: muss umsteigen. Place: Wo? Delay: Verspätung. Platform: der Bahnsteig.
Ask a partner where you need to change, then say that the train is delayed. Keep each message short and clear.
