Describing things with adjectives

Eigenschaften mit Adjektiven

Describe people and things using sein plus an adjective without an adjective ending.

Use a form of sein to connect a person or thing to a description: Der Kaffee ist heiß. The adjective after sein has no gender or plural ending: Die Tasche ist schwer. Die Taschen sind schwer. Only the verb changes from ist to sind. Compare this with an adjective before a noun, as in heißer Kaffee; adjective endings before nouns are a different pattern and are not tested here.

Der Kaffee ist heiß.

The coffee is hot.

Die Tasche ist schwer.

The bag is heavy.

Das Zimmer ist sauber.

The room is clean.

Die Arbeit ist anstrengend.

The work is tiring.

Der Weg ist kurz.

The route is short.

Die Kollegin ist freundlich.

The female colleague is friendly.

Identify the subject, choose ist for one thing or sind for several, then add the describing word without an ending.

Describe a drink, a bag, a room, work, a route or a colleague. Learn the noun with its article and the adjective with its meaning.

Do not transfer an ending from a noun phrase to the adjective after sein: Der Kaffee ist heiß, not heißes.

After sein, the adjective stays the same: Das Zimmer ist sauber. Die Zimmer sind sauber.

Compare Der Weg ist kurz with Die Wege sind kurz. Explain which word changes and why.
