A first look at weil
Ein erster Blick auf weil
Give a simple reason with weil and place the conjugated verb at the end of the reason clause.
weil means “because” and introduces a subordinate clause. Put a comma before weil, then use subject + other information + conjugated verb: Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich hier wohne. Compare this with the main-clause order Ich wohne hier. A short answer such as Weil ich arbeiten möchte is natural after a Warum question; möchte is conjugated and therefore comes last, while arbeiten stands directly before it.
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich hier wohne.
I am learning German because I live here.
Ich komme später, weil der Bus Verspätung hat.
I will come later because the bus is delayed.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
I am staying at home because I am ill.
Warum lernst du Deutsch?
Why are you learning German?
Weil ich arbeiten möchte.
Because I would like to work.
Ich esse jetzt, weil ich Hunger habe.
I am eating now because I am hungry.
Build the main clause first. Add a comma and weil, then place the subject and the remaining information before the conjugated verb: weil + ich + hier + wohne.
Use weil to explain why you study German, arrive late, stay home, eat or change a plan.
Do not keep main-clause order after weil. “weil ich wohne hier” is wrong in standard written German; use “weil ich hier wohne.”
The comma marks the boundary. After weil, wait for the conjugated verb at the end of the reason clause.
Answer five Warum questions with full weil clauses and underline the final conjugated verb.
