The perfect tense with sein
Perfekt mit sein
Talk about completed changes of place or state with a correctly conjugated form of sein and a past participle.
A group of common verbs use sein, not haben, in the present perfect. At A1, learn frequent verbs that show a change of place or state: gehen → ist gegangen, fahren → ist gefahren, kommen → ist gekommen, aufstehen → ist aufgestanden. Conjugate sein for the subject and put the participle at the end. Learn the auxiliary with each verb; do not assume every activity involving movement uses sein.
Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.
I went home.
Wir sind mit dem Bus gefahren.
We travelled by bus.
Sie ist spät gekommen.
She arrived late.
Er ist um sechs aufgestanden.
He got up at six.
Bist du schon angekommen?
Have you arrived yet?
Der Zug ist abgefahren.
The train departed.
Choose the correct form of sein first, then place the participle at the end: Wir sind mit dem Bus gefahren. Objects, destinations and time expressions remain between the two verb parts.
Use this form to say where someone went, how they travelled, when they arrived, whether a train left, or when someone got up.
Do not combine these taught verbs with haben: “Ich habe nach Hause gegangen” is wrong; say “Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.”
Change of place or state in this lesson → a form of sein + participle at the end. Still learn each verb with its auxiliary.
Report four completed journeys or changes of state with different subjects, then ask one arrival question with bist.
