The verb in position two

Verb auf Position 2

Build German main statements with the conjugated verb in the second position.

In a German main statement, the first part may be the subject or a time phrase, but the conjugated verb stays in position two: Ich arbeite heute; Heute arbeite ich.

Ich arbeite heute.

I work today.

Heute arbeite ich.

I work today.

Morgen lerne ich Deutsch.

Tomorrow I am learning German.

Um acht beginnt die Arbeit.

Work starts at eight.

Am Samstag kaufe ich ein.

I go shopping on Saturday.

Nach der Arbeit fahre ich nach Hause.

After work I go home.

Position means a sentence part, not always the second written word. A phrase such as Nach der Arbeit fills the first position, so fahre follows it and the subject ich comes next.

Put today, tomorrow, a clock time, or a day first to emphasize when something happens without losing correct word order.

Do not leave the verb out or place it after both subject and time. Ich heute heute is not a sentence; use Ich arbeite heute or Heute arbeite ich.

One element first, conjugated verb second: Morgen | lerne | ich Deutsch.

Rewrite three subject-first sentences with a time phrase first while keeping the verb in position two.
