Dative for people and common expressions
Dativ für Personen und feste Wendungen
Recognize dem and der and use common dative phrases with mit, bei, helfen, and geben.
At A1, learn the dative through useful groups: mit dem Bus, mit der Chefin, bei der Arbeit. Some verbs also introduce a person in the dative, including helfen and geben.
Ich fahre mit dem Bus.
I travel by bus.
Ich spreche mit der Chefin.
I speak with the female manager.
Er ist bei der Arbeit.
He is at work.
Ich helfe dem Mann.
I help the man.
Sie gibt der Frau das Formular.
She gives the woman the form.
Wir fahren mit einem Taxi.
We travel by taxi.
Masculine and neuter der/das become dem; feminine die becomes der. Ein becomes einem with a masculine or neuter noun. Mit and bei always take the dative.
Say how you travel, whom you speak with or help, where someone is, and who receives an item.
Mit requires the dative. Say mit dem Bus, not mit den Bus when you mean one bus.
Dative: dem for masculine/neuter, der for feminine; mit and bei always require it.
Make two phrases with mit, one with bei, and one sentence about helping a person.
