mein, dein and Ihr
mein, dein und Ihr
Say who something belongs to with mein, dein, and polite Ihr.
Possessive words change to match the following noun: mein Mann but meine Tasche. Use dein for informal singular “your” and capitalized Ihr with formal Sie.
Das ist mein Mann.
That is my husband.
Das ist meine Tasche.
That is my bag.
Ist das dein Handy?
Is that your mobile phone?
Wie ist Ihre Adresse?
What is your address?
Meine Nummer ist neu.
My number is new.
Dein Termin ist morgen.
Your appointment is tomorrow.
Masculine and neuter nouns often use mein/dein/Ihr in the nominative; feminine and plural nouns add -e: meine Tasche, Ihre Adresse. Capitalized Ihr signals polite “your.”
Introduce a family member, identify a bag or phone, and ask formally for an address.
The ending follows the noun, not the owner. Mann is masculine, so say mein Mann, not meine Mann.
Masculine/neuter: mein. Feminine/plural: meine. Polite your: Ihr/Ihre with a capital I.
