Learning nouns with der, die and das

der, die, das als Teil des Wortes

Learn each new noun together with its article and recognize the genders of six everyday nouns.

In the singular nominative, der marks masculine nouns, die feminine nouns, and das neuter nouns. Memorize the article with the noun, rather than guessing from what an object is.

der Tisch

the table

die Tasche

the bag

das Handy

the mobile phone

der Schlüssel

the key

die Wohnung

the apartment

das Fenster

the window

These are dictionary forms: der Tisch, die Tasche, das Handy. Articles can change in sentences because of case; this lesson focuses on learning each noun’s basic article.

Knowing a noun’s gender helps you choose articles later when buying things, describing your home, or asking for an object.

A table is der Tisch, not die Tisch. German grammatical gender is not determined by an object’s appearance or its English name.

Say and write the pair every time: der Tisch, die Tasche, das Handy. German nouns start with a capital letter.

Group the six nouns under der, die, and das, then recall each pair without looking.
