Regular verbs in the present tense

Regelmäßige Verben im Präsens

Choose present-tense endings that agree with the person doing the action.

For regular verbs, start with the stem and add the subject’s ending: ich lerne, du lernst, er/sie/es lernt, wir lernen, ihr lernt, sie/Sie lernen.

Ich arbeite heute.

I am working today.

Du lernst Deutsch.

You are learning German.

Er wohnt in Essen.

He lives in Essen.

Wir machen eine Pause.

We are taking a break.

Sie arbeitet im Lager.

She works in the warehouse.

Ihr lernt zusammen.

You are learning together.

Arbeiten needs an extra e in forms such as du arbeitest, er arbeitet, and ihr arbeitet. In statements here, the conjugated verb comes in position two.

These forms let you say who works, learns, lives somewhere, or takes a break.

Do not use the infinitive after ich in a simple statement: Ich arbeite heute, not Ich arbeiten heute. Du needs lernst, not lerne.

Ich -e; du -st; er/sie/es -t; wir -en; ihr -t; sie/Sie -en. Notice the extra e in arbeitet.

Choose a regular verb and make sentences with ich, du, wir, and ihr.
