nicht and kein
nicht und kein
Say that something is not true or that you do not have, need, or want something.
Use kein to negate a noun that would have ein or no article: einen Termin becomes keinen Termin. Use nicht to negate an adjective or an action: nicht teuer; Der Bus kommt nicht.
Ich habe keinen Termin.
I do not have an appointment.
Das ist nicht teuer.
That is not expensive.
Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.
I do not drink coffee.
Ich habe keine Zeit.
I do not have time.
Der Bus kommt nicht.
The bus is not coming.
Das ist kein Problem.
That is not a problem.
Ich brauche keinen Beleg.
I do not need a receipt.
Wir arbeiten heute nicht.
We are not working today.
Kein changes to match the noun and its case. Here the masculine objects Termin, Kaffee, and Beleg take keinen; feminine Zeit takes keine. After ist, neuter Problem takes kein.
At reception you can explain that you have no appointment. In a shop you can say you do not need a receipt.
Do not use the same kein ending for every noun: keinen Termin, keine Zeit, kein Problem. Do not replace nicht before teuer with kein.
